The key date: midday on 5 November 2026
Civil Service Careers is explicit: you must apply while the application window is open for entry to the Fast Stream in 2027. Before you apply you choose which schemes to apply for. Fast streamers do not choose their department or specific role, and the Fast Stream endeavours to meet location preferences wherever possible.
Stage 1: online tests
After you submit your application, your tests become available within a few days and you are emailed when they are ready. There are 2 tests, work-based scenarios and the case study assessment, and you have 7 days to complete them from the moment they are made available. They are untimed and take around one and a half hours in total. Our guide to the online tests covers both formats.
Results in December 2026
Results should be available in December 2026. Everyone receives feedback that reflects their individual performance, highlights strengths and gives tips for the future.
Stage 2: additional information
The Fast Stream reviews your application and your online test responses. On some schemes you are asked for additional information to go alongside your application, and you have 7 days to complete the requested sections, so keep an eye on your emails.
Stage 3: the virtual assessment centre
Candidates who pass the earlier stages take part in a virtual assessment centre over half a day. It consists of a written advice exercise, a stakeholder communication exercise and a personal development conversation, testing your ability to analyse information and make decisions, engage with others, and demonstrate learning agility and self-awareness.
Stage 4: the final selection board
Most schemes, though not all, finish with a final selection board: a scheme-specific assessment whose content depends on the scheme you applied for.
Starting in 2027
All schemes begin in September or October 2027, on either 6 September or 4 October, depending on the scheme. Fast streamers start on a salary of £31,554, with the potential to reach £45,000 to £55,000 after completing the programme.
Turn the dates into a plan
